Summer School students may choose from one of the following courses (click on the course for a sample two week schedule):
English Language Tuition
Our courses follow a teaching programme which is designed to help you to improve your confidence in spoken English whilst developing grammar, listening, reading, writing and vocabulary skills. This is done through a communicative syllabus featuring lots of task-based activities in themed weeks and lessons linked to your excursions.
After testing you will be placed in an appropriate class and your progress will be checked weekly though a short review. Our maximum class size is 12 students. At the end of your course you will receive a report, course certificate and take your work home in a folder.
The syllabus also provides a thorough preparation for the Trinity College, London Graded Examination in Spoken English (GESE) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Students that choose GESE will sit the speaking exam on their final Friday. Students that choose IELTS have the choice to sit the exam on a number of dates in Summer 2020.
- Students who select English Plus Activities, English Plus Golf, English Plus Riding or English Plus Karting receive 15 hours of English lessons each week.
- Students who select English Plus British Culture, English Plus GCSE Taster Classes, English Plus A Level Taster Classes receive 15 hours of English lessons and 12 hours of subject specific lessons each week.
- Students who select IELTS Preparation receive 27 hours of IELTS lessons each week.
The English Plus Activities course is designed for students that want to improve their English and have a holiday. Students take part in activities including - Rock Climbing, Raft Building, Sports, Group Competitions and Games. We want students to mix with other nationalities and use their English. We split up into mixed nationality activity teams to take encourage communication.
English Plus British Culture
The English Plus British Culture Course is designed for students who want to learn more about British Life and Society. Students do not take part in activities in the afternoon but, instead, attend three hours of additional study every afternoon except Wednesday. The course is designed around a weekly topic and includes classroom lessons, educational visits, guest speakers and practical educational activities.
British Culture Schedule 2020
English Plus GCSE (15 & Under) & A Level (16 Plus) Taster Classes
English Plus GCSE and A Level students experience 12 hours per week of teaching in English Literature, Maths and Science to either a GCSE or A Level standard. Sessions will focus on weekly topics with progress tests on a weekly basis. The aim is to see a clear progression throughout the duration of the course. English Plus GCSE and A Level student join the Wednesday afternoon excursion with all other students.
The IELTS preparation course is designed for students who already have a good grasp of the English Language and whose level is Intermediate or above. Students who enrol on the IELTS Preparation course should usually be at least 16 years of age and in senior school in their home countries. Most students who are taking the IELTS Preparation course will either be starting or considering starting academic courses in UK in the future.
Students on this course have the option to take an IELTS examination in Rugby in the final week of the course. Please note that there is an additional charge of £180.00 for students who choose to sit the optional IELTS examination.
English Plus Golf
On four afternoons each week, students receive expert golf tuition from PGA qualified coaches and play nine holes at one of Leicestershire’s premier golf courses – Kilworth Springs Golf Club. The course is designed for students who already have experience of playing golf and who possess all necessary equipment.
Coaching sessions will include:
- Rules of Golf and Etiquette
- Basic set-up, grip, stance, posture and alignment
- Swing analysis in computerised digital teaching studio
- Short game skills – bunker play, chipping and putting
- Awkward lies and shaping the ball
English Plus Riding
Leicestershire possesses some of England’s most famous riding country. In partnership with Somerby Equestrian Centre, English Plus Riding students experience 10 hours per week of expert riding tuition and hacks in Leicestershire’s beautiful countryside. Sessions may incorporate show jumping, cross country and dressage disciplines. English Plus Riding students also learn about horse and pony care and stable management. Some students can join English boys and girls in their riding classes.
English Plus Karting
English Plus Karting students experience 10 hours per week of expert driving, karting and fitness instruction. Sessions will focus on ability and skill, with a daily review. The aim is to see a clear progression throughout the duration of the course. Sessions are run by our partners at Stretton Circuit. .
